Winterfest Educational Toys

I took my family to Winterfest this past weekend. Science North, a science museum had an interactive workshop, we had to go. It was a good thing no one told the kids these were educational toys, it may have quieted the shouting, laughter and astonishment. The amazing science kits ranged from building bridges to exploding candy. The kids had to push aside the parents to get their turn playing with some awesome science toys. For the full story go here

Educational Toys are Intelligent Toys

My son Jack had been quietly playing with his Meccano set when we heard him scream, sweet!
What a cool toy, my friend Dave said, it's a ferris wheel. It's a solar powered ferris wheel, said Jack. Dave asked me, How did you get him to play with educational toys

Educational Toys Come in from the Cold

My son Jack and I took some time out from playing with the educational toys he received for Christmas and went to a hockey game over the holidays. Like most 7 year olds, his favorite part is when the Zamboni comes out to clean the ice. We had seen this a thousand times so I was stymied when Jack said, “Why is there smoke coming out of the back?” It’s steam I told Jack, they use hot water because it freezes faster. I could see the wheels turning now and knew I was getting in over my head. “But ice is cold, shouldn’t they use cold water, Dad”. Well, there was only one period to go and a thousand questions, most of which I didn’t have the answers to, so I told Jack that when we got home we would do our own science experiment to see whether hot or cold water froze faster. To get the most out of this I thought we should treat it as a science project. I looked through some of the science toys Jack had and found a science kit that showed how to do some experiments. Jack and I made a plan and a list of all the things we’d need. We also searched the internet to see if there were any educational toys that might help us. We didn’t find any educational toys, but we did find some very interesting facts. For the full story go to

Educational Toys - Food for Thought

find that perfect toy for their children. They often ask their children what toys they would like. Well have you ever asked your children what they would like for dinner and heard them say ice cream.

There is nothing wrong with a little ice cream for a treat after dinner, just as there is nothing wrong with a cartoon figurine or dress up clothes.

Educational Toys Take a Vacation

I walked to pick up my kids from school, another successful year of sports, educational toys and activities having been crossed off my list. Summer vacation was upon us and I was elected camp director for 2 months, having met the stringent requirement of a heartbeat and not being present for the vote. Some may have been amused by the conspiracty, certainly the Cheshire cat grins on Jack 5, and Charlotte 7 were a clue, but the ear plugs and aspirin my wife gave me along with the first aid kit made me feel like the petrified slave awaiting his fate in the Collisseum tunnel in the move Gladiator.

News

Bill Gates (Yes, the Bill Gates of Microsoft) recently contributed a rare op ed article where he expressed concern that “Too few young people are acquiring the knowledge they need to use technology in creative and innovative ways.”

Bill goes on to say that, “We can all help address this issue. As parents, we must help our children appreciate the joys of learning and discovery. Teachers and educators must find ways to teach science and math so it is relevant and exciting.”

Of course we at Brainwaves agree!  Why not choose a fun educational toy for each child that you are close to, and encourage him or her towards a greater knowledge of science and math?  It’s a cornerstone of the skill set required to succeed in the future.
